Questions
Where do the exchange rates come from?
From the European Central Bank's daily reference rates. The ECB publishes them once per working day, in the afternoon Central European Time, so on weekends and bank holidays you see the last working day's rate — usually Friday's. The page always shows the date of the rates it is using.
Is this the rate my bank or card will give me?
No. These are mid-market reference rates — the midpoint banks trade at. A bank, card, ATM or exchange booth adds its own margin or fee on top, and airport booths tend to add the most. Use this to know what something is really worth; expect to pay a little more. If a card terminal offers to charge you in your home currency, paying in the local currency is usually cheaper.
Does the currency converter work offline?
Yes. The rates are built into the page, so once it has loaded it converts in airplane mode too. When you are online it quietly checks for newer rates and updates the date it shows; if it can't reach the feed, it keeps the rates it has and says how old they are.
Which currencies can I convert?
The 30 currencies the European Central Bank publishes a reference rate for, including the US dollar, euro, pound, shekel, yen, Swiss franc, Canadian and Australian dollars, Mexican peso, Brazilian real, Thai baht, Indian rupee and South African rand. Currencies the ECB does not cover, such as the Argentine peso or the Vietnamese dong, are not included.
Is it free, and what happens to what I type?
It is free, with no account and no ads. Your amount and currencies stay in this browser; the only thing the page downloads is the public rate table. A share link carries your currencies inside the link itself.
How do I split trip costs paid in different currencies?
