About MUTEK.JP

MUTEK.JP is the Tokyo edition of the international MUTEK network — a festival for digital creativity, electronic music and audiovisual art founded in Montreal in 2000. The 2026 edition (the 11th in Tokyo) runs November 20-23 and is hosted for the first time at MoN Takanawa: The Museum of Narratives, a museum in the new Takanawa Gateway City development that opened in March 2026 — a break from a decade of Shibuya clubs (WWW, Spotify O-EAST, WOMB). The program splits into two tracks: "A/Visions", large audiovisual performances in the main hall (Box1000), and "Play", more intimate electronic sets in the smaller hall (Box300), alongside a "Tatami" space for additional programming. The 2026 lineup combines international names — including Max Cooper, Richie Hawtin (a world-premiere Plastikman show themed around Japanese sake fermentation), Hania Rani, and Grand River — with Japanese artists such as mouse on the keys (20th-anniversary show), Ryoichi Kurokawa, and Daito Manabe with ELEVENPLAY. The festival is aimed at an avant-garde electronic music and new-media art audience, not mainstream festivalgoers, and is reachable from Takanawa Gateway or Sengakuji stations, both a short walk from the venue.

Checklist for MUTEK.JP

  • Buy your ticket/day pass in advance on the official site (tokyo.mutek.org) — the venue (MoN Takanawa) is new this year and capacity is limited.
  • This is a brand-new venue (opened March 2026) — check closer to the date for logistics updates (bag checks, re-entry policy, coat check) that aren’t yet documented from past editions.
  • Get a Suica/Pasmo card (or Welcome Suica for tourists) for Tokyo train travel.
  • Plan your route to MoN Takanawa: 6 min walk from Takanawa Gateway station, or 3 min from Sengakuji station (exit A4) — not the Shibuya clubs used in prior years.
  • Carry cash (about ¥15,000-20,000) alongside a card — not every vendor in Japan accepts cards.
  • Dress in layers: daytime around 16°C, nighttime around 8°C in late-November Tokyo, mostly dry.
  • Bring a passport/ID for entry, even though short-term visitors don’t need a visa.
  • Check in advance whether a listed time is "doors" or the actual start — the schedule page and artist page are not always consistent.
  • For the closing show (Richie Hawtin & Ali M. Demirel, Nov 23) — doors 17:00, show 18:00-20:00 JST (the only time in the lineup verified by two independent sources).
  • Bring earplugs for the Box1000 shows, including the closing show.
